Dark Eye Circles

Dark Eye Circles – Understanding the Causes

Dark eye circles are a common aesthetic concern and can arise from multiple contributing factors. These include shadowing from tear trough deformity, sunken facial structures, excessive sagging skin, and venous congestion. Venous congestion is often associated with ageing, chronic sinusitis, and allergic rhinitis, and is known to be particularly resistant to treatment.

In many cases, a combination of these factors is present, making treatment more complex. Dark eye circles are also exacerbated by thinning of the skin around the eyes. For this reason, skin integrity must be carefully assessed before initiating any treatment to ensure safety and effectiveness.

What Treatments Are Available for Dark Eye Circles?

Treatment for dark eye circles is individually tailored according to the specific aetiology. Depending on the underlying cause, treatment options may include:

  • Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is administered to fill sunken areas and reduce shadowing caused by tear trough deformity.

  • Laser Treatment
Lasers are used to lighten pigmentation and smoothen sagging skin around the eyes.

  • Treatment for Venous Congestion
Venous congestion may be improved with topical medication and a combination of Long Pulsed Nd:YAG and Erbium:YAG lasers.

It is important to note that topical creams, whether prescriptive or non-prescriptive, generally require several months before any noticeable improvement may be observed, if at all.
